Ask The Experts: Should I Adjust For Heat & Humidity?

by Mario Fraioli

Hi there,

I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and every summer running in the heat and humidity proves to be a challenge for me.  Even getting out by 5:30 am does not always seem to improve conditions substantially.  When running tempos and intervals in warm, humid weather, I always struggle to hit the times I feel I should be able to make and end up frustrated. My question to you is: is it comparable to do these types of runs at a similar effort level and/or heart rate that I would expect under more ideal conditions?  Or should I just plan to add a certain amount of time (e.g. 5, 10, 20 seconds) to each mile or interval? Should tempos and intervals each be handled differently?  Any light you could shed on this would be much appreciated.  Thanks for your help!

Soggy and sluggish in Philly,
Christine

It was nearly a dozen years ago when Stefano Baldini earned his first European title, winning the gold medal in the marathon at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest.  It was a glorious day for Italian marathoning.  The 27 year-old Baldini led his teammates Danilo Goffi and Vincenzo Modica to silver and bronze medals, respectively, and Italy took home the European Cup for the best team score.

Workout Of The Week: Recovery Run

by Matt Fitzgerald

Recovery runs don’t actually accelerate muscle recovery, but they do have other important benefits.

Written by: Matt Fitzgerald

If you asked a stadium-size crowd of other runners to name the most important type of running workout, some would say tempo runs, others would say long runs, and still others would say intervals of one kind or another.  None would mention recovery runs.  Unless I happened to be in that stadium.

by Training

Almost every triathlete has experienced back pain at one time or another. Whether it is a chronic ache in the neck following a long ride, tightness between the shoulder blades with swimming or sharp pain in the low back during a run, pain inhibits our training, limits our performance and frustrates us—and probably any family member or friend friend who is within close range.
