XTERRA Weekend Round-Up

XTERRA BrazilIt was a big weekend in the XTERRA Championships this weekend, with three separate races taking place around the globe.

XTERRA Brazil
Costa Rican triathlete Rom Akerson registered his first XTERRA victory, beating Canadian Mike Vine by just under a minute in Angra Dos Reis. He Akerson, who won the XTERRA amateur Championship in 2006, powered away from a strong field, which included last year’s Champion Alexandre Manzan (third), and XTERRA South Africa Champ Lieuwe Boonstra in fourth.

In the women’s race, Maria Soledad Omar from Argentina defeated last year’s champion Carla Prada by nearly two minutes.

Sam Gardner was able to successfully defend his XTERRA Japan Championship title in Marunma this weekend. The British triathlete edged out local favourite Takahiro Ogasawara to take the win by just 52 seconds.  Long-time XTERRA pro Yu Yumoto from Japan finished third, followed by Australia’s Matthew Murphy.

In the women’s race Saipan’s Mieko Carey stormed past Aussie pro Kylee Lock to take the win in 3:00:16.

XTERRA Lake Tahoe
Former XTERRA World Champion Nicolas Lebrun took the title in 2:47: 36 at Incline Village, Nevada this weekend.

In a dominant performance, Lebrun finished nearly ten minutes ahead of second-placed Damian Gonzales, and was a further two minutes ahead of third-placed amateur athlete John Donovan (3:01:17)

“It’s a long race with a lot of climbing and also at altitude,” said LeBrun. “It was hard because I was by myself most of the race and had to keep pushing.”
