Big Barefoot Turnout Expected In New York

by

With the surge in popularity thanks to Christopher McDougall’s recent bestseller, “Born to Run”, there should be more barefoot runners than ever lining up at the starting line at the ING New York City Marathon this weekend.

According to New York Roadrunners’ CEO Mary Wittenberg more and more race participants are interested in running through the five boroughs shoeless. ““I feel like I get asked at least weekly, if not more,” she says.

Runner’s World editor in chief David Willey says the trend isn’t “new, rather newly popular.” According to the Barefoot Runners Society, a national club for barefoot runners, their membership has doubled in a year.

Other than worrying about stress fractures or other potential injuries brought on by going shoeless this weekend, barefoot runners also have to contend with what to do with their computer chip–something usually tied to a shoelace. Barefoot running enthusiast Rick Roeber’s solution for this dilemma is to wear the chip on a leather strap he ties around his ankle.
