With cameras following him every painful step of the way, Edison Pena, the famous Chilean miner finished the ING New York City Marathon.
Just less than a month from being rescued from the mine, which he and 33 others were trapped in for a record 69 days, Pena ran through searing knee pain for 26.2 miles.
“I’m here, because I want people to feel free,” Pena said through a translator afterwards. “I want them to strive for their own freedom. That’s why it was worthwhile for me to come this far to runĀ a marathon.”
Pena had been nicknamed “The Runner” by his colleagues, because he ran several miles a day in the trapped mine which was 2,300 feet below the surface.
A big smile on his face and a Chilean flag draped around him, Pena pumped his fist and waved to the crowd as he crossed the finish line. His time was 5:50.
