With 10 marathons under her belt, Britain’s Mara Yamauchi will be relying on her experience in New York this Sunday.
All eyes are on Kenya’s Mary Keitany and American Shalane Flanagan as top contenders, but Yamauchi, the sixth-place finisher in the 2008 Olympic marathon, shouldn’t be counted out. She’s familiar with New York, having won the New York City Half Marathon. And she knows the marathon, whereas both Keitany andĀ Flanagan are debutants.
Her experience should definitely pay off for her Sunday.
“‘I think now I have quite an overall view of what I have to do to win a race. I want to get to the start line in New York with everything in my tool bag and make sure that I do everything right on the day. The competition will be tough and the course is very tough. I feel a tough course suits me because I’m not a super-fast runner. I’m more of the type that grinds it out at the end. I’m hoping that things will go my way,” she said.
