The 2009 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships will take place this Saturday at a wet Balboa Park in San Diego, Cali. As has become custom over the past few years, the usually dry San Diego weather takes a vacation for the weekend of the championships, leaving the top high school runners in the country to deal with what many consider true cross country conditions. Along with the mud and hills of Morley Field, the competitors will have to be prepared for some fierce competition on Saturday. Here is a quick breakdown of who to keep an eye on this Saturday.

Sophomore Lucas Verzbicas has a chance to become a rare underclass boy’s cross country national champion.

It is quite common for freshman, sophomore and junior girls to win the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship. In fact, in the 30-year history of the event, fewer than half of the girls’ champions have been seniors. On the boys’ side, things are very different. Only two juniors have ever won the event, and no sophomore or freshman has broken the tape at Foot Locker. It seems that adolescent male and female runners develop on different schedules.

This year, however, we may well see the first sophomore winner of the boys’ high school national cross country championship. Sixteen-year-old Lukas Verzbicas of Sandburg High School in Illinois is among a handful of the 32 qualifiers for Saturday’s championship race is San Diego who is considered a strong contender for the title.

Megan Goethals of Rochester, Mich., and Lukas Verzbicas of Orland Hills, Ill., won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (FLCCC) Midwest Regional today. The girls’ race began with a pack of ten runners, led by Goethals, Emily Sisson from Chesterfield, Mo., and Sara Kroll from Westland, Mich.  After the two-mile mark, Goethals and Sisson separated from the pack, with Goethals securing the title in 17:24.  Five of the top ten finishers are repeat qualifiers for the National Finals.  Goethals is a two-time Midwest Regional Champion (2008 and 2009) and Sisson is a four-time qualifier.

Store owner Kris Hartner was presented with the award at the “Top 50 Stores” presentation at The Running Event in Austin, Tex. The 2009 awards were presented by The Competitor Group.

Palmeiro-Winters Named USATF Athlete Of The Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Amy Palmiero-Winters (Hicksville, N.Y.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the 10th Annual Heartland “Spirit of the Prairie” 100 Mile Endurance Run on October 11, in Cassoday, Ks.

A below-the-knee amputee, Palmiero-Winters won the women’s 100 mile race in 18 hours 54 minutes 13 seconds. It was the second fastest time in race history and she became the first woman amputee to finish a 100-mile run.

Des Moines Marathon Gets Inturrupted By Train

The snafu turned the 26.2 mile race in to a 400m dash!

At this past weekend’s Des Moines Marathon the race had an unplanned diversion for the leaders as the headed in to the homestretch. Race leaders Simon Sawe found himself trapped behind a train that was crossing over the marathon course.
