Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander and Ironman 70.3 World Champion Julie Dibens proved once again that they are two of the best in the world. Alexander rode with one of the sport’s fastest cyclists, Chris Lieto, and ultimately ended up holding off Ben Hoffman for the win. Dibens, who was coming off of a disappointing performance at last week’s Rev3 Quassy Triathlon, dominated from wire-to-wire, ultimately finishing 15th overall.

Each region has a contender to look out for.
The 2009 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships will take place this Saturday at a wet Balboa Park in San Diego, Cali. As has become custom over the past few years, the usually dry San Diego weather takes a vacation for the weekend of the championships, leaving the top high school runners in the country to deal with what many consider true cross country conditions. Along with the mud and hills of Morley Field, the competitors will have to be prepared for some fierce competition on Saturday. Here is a quick breakdown of who to keep an eye on this Saturday.

The new Big Man in American distance running hopes to hold his recent record-setting form into October.
Dathan Ritzenhein is on a roll. The 26-year-old distance ace placed sixth in the World Track & Field Championships 10,000 meters on August 17 in Berlin. His 27:22.28 clocking in that race was the fourth fastest time ever recorded by an American. Less than two weeks later, Ritz broke the American record for 5000m, running 12:56.27 in Zurich.

A cool morning greeted the small, but strong, pro field as they jumped into Henry Hagg Lake looking for a piece of the $20,000 pro prize purse. In it’s third year of existence, 2009 would be the first year the race offered a prize purse for professional athletes. The prize purse attracted a group of Ironman and Ironman 70.3 champions such as Luke McKenzie, Maik Twelsiek, Kieran Doe, Samantha McGlone and Amy Marsch.

In a shocking move the young American distance champion signs with world record holder.
Taking the sports agency world for a loop, newly crowned USATF 10,000m champion Galen Rupp has joined Jeremy Wariner as a top client for current 400m world recorder holder, now agent, Michael Johnson. With fellow Nike Oregon Project members Kara and Adam Goucher, Dathan Ritzenhein and Josh Rohatinsky represented by Peter Stubbs, it seemed the obvious choice for the newly-turned professional. Johnson only has a roster of four athletes, all of which are sprinters, so the addition of Rupp is a new venture. It remains to be seen the exact reason for the choice, although Johnson is certainly highly respected throughout the running community.
