Recession? What recession? So the organizers of the Rock ‘N’ Roll Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon might be saying after the first-year event sold out months before its June 27 staging.
In any economy there are trends and counter trends of course. Not every business and industry suffers in an economic downturn. If the growth trend in a certain industry is strong enough at the time a recession hits, and if that particular industry is sufficiently recession-proof, it may continue to grow even as the nation’s total domestic product shrinks.

2009 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Huge matchups scheduled between female distance stars in multiple events.
According to the USATF, female distance athletes are stepping up in multiple events in search of world team berths. Jenny Barringer and Anna Willard are tabbed to face off in both the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase. Barringer is ranked number two in the world in the 1500 and number three in the world in the steeplechase. Willard is ranked number four in the world in both events.

Defending world champion will run his first 100m of the season in Eugene.
American record holder Tyson Gay will run his first 100m of the season at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon next week. As defending World champion Gay gets a bye into the World Championships and therefore is using the US Championships as a test. Gay has not ruled out running all three rounds, but has only stated he will run a very hard effort in the opening round to gauge his fitness.

It was all about the distance runners on opening night.

Emily Sisson of Missouri rolled to victory at the girls 5000m at the Nike Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T, in Greensboro, North Carolina Thursday night, clocking 16:34.36. It was the second fastest performance in the history of this meet. Only Ashley Brasovan’s 16:18.91, run last year, is quicker. Sisson led early, held off a challenge from Shelby Greany midway, and then pulled away. Lindsay Flanagan finished strong to take second, in 17:01, with Chelsea Ley third in 17:07.

Spar European Team Championships
Men and women combine performances to crown the top European track and field nation.
Led by Olympic steeplechase champion Gulnara Galkina-Samitova and European 1500m indoor champion Anna Alminova, the Russian team hopes to capture the redeveloped Spar European Team Championships this weekend in Leiria, Portugal. In the past, men and women competed separately in this event, formerly known as the European Cup, but this year organizers have combined the competitions to crown an overall European champion.

INDIANAPOLIS – 2008 World Cup silver medalist Kami Semick (Bend, Ore.) leads Team USA for the 23rd IAU 100 km World Cup tomorrow in Torhout, Belgium. Last year in Tarquinia, Italy, Semick earned an individual silver medal in the World Cup 100km, and led the United States to a Team Silver Medal.

Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt had a very slow start but made up for it in winning the 100m at the Ostrava (Czech Republic) Golden Spike meeting in an event record time, and world leading, 9.77 seconds. Bolt says it was the “second worst start of my life,” which bodes well for him considering it was the fifth fastest clocking of his career.

INDIANAPOLIS – Galen Rupp has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning both the men’s 5,000 and 10,000 meters last week at the 2009 NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Having already won three NCAA individual titles this school year, Rupp ran the 5,000m prelims on Wednesday, won the 10,000m on Thursday and came back on Friday to win the 5,000m, all in the span of about 45 hours. In the 10,000m final, Arkansas’ Shawn Forrest and Liberty’s Samuel Chelanga set out on a fast pace but Rupp kept them in his sights the entire way and with 600m to go he passed the duo and then won the race in 28:21.45, his last 800m ran in 1:58.96.
