Hurricane Earl was a no show this weekend in Virginia Beach, but Kenya’s Yusuf Songoka and Japan’s Madoka Ogi made their presences felt in a big way on Sunday, winning the 10th Annual Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon presented by SunTrust in 1:02:46 and 1:14:17, respectively.
Songoka, who posted three podium finishes here from 2005 through 2007, out-sprinted countryman Patrick Ivuti (2nd, 1:02:51) and Ethiopia’s Tesfiye Sendeku (3rd, 1:03:09) in the final half mile of the famous Virginia Beach Boardwalk to claim his first Rock ‘n’ Roll victory.
“I feel at home here,” said the 31-year-old Sangoka. “Six years running the race–4th 3rd, 3rd, 2nd–to win is a privilege and a good preparation for my fall marathon.”
Songoka, Ivuti and Sendeku battled relentlessly for 13.1 miles, separating themselves early on in the race from the rest of the field. Passing 10K in 29:15, the two Kenyan’s alternated surges, trying to drop their Ethiopian rival, who began to massage his right hamstring, which admittedly affected him the rest of the way.

Briton Mo Farah, who won both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter titles at this summer’s European Championships, has decided to end his season, skipping next month’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
“I had a great 2010 season and my body is telling me that it is time to take a break from training and racing,” Farah explained through a statement circulated to the media by his management company, PACE Sports Management. ”I have been competing since the start of the year at cross-country, road and track and feel that I need a few weeks off now to let my body recover so that I can start winter training fit and healthy.”
In addition to Farah’s dramatic double-gold performance in Barcelona, the first by a European man in 20 years, he also broke David Moorcroft’s 28 year-old British record for 5,000 meters, becoming the first British man to break 13 minutes. Farah also won the European Cup 10,000-meter title and set a national record for 10K on the road, clocking 27:43.
“I look forward to the 2011 IAAF World T&F Championships in Daegu and the 2012 Olympic Games in my home city of London,” Farah added. ”I came close to getting a medal in the past two World T&F Championships and hope that I can continue to improve over the next few years.”

Four of the top-10 marathon times ever have been recorded at the real,-Berlin Marathon, and organizers hope that their flat and fast course will deliver more top performances at this year’s race on Sunday, September 26. Organizers announced today their leading contenders in the men’s race, and seven have career best times under two hours and seven minutes, said race director Mark Milde.
The top two athletes are Kenyans Patrick Makau and Geoffrey Mutai. Makau, who won last April’s Rotterdam Marathon in the fastest time of 2010, is the fourth-fastest marathoner of all time with a 2:04:48 personal best. Mutai finished only seven seconds behind Makau in Rotterdam, running 2:04:55. Makau has already tasted victory in Berlin: he’s won the Vattenfall Berlin Half Marathon twice.
Also announced were Kenyans Eliud Kiptanui (2:05:39 PB) and Gilbert Yegon (2:06:18), and Ethiopians Bazu Worku (2:06:15) and Yemane Tsege Adhane (2:06:30).
Haile Gebrselassie, who won Berlin the previous three years, setting the current world record of 2:03:59 in 2008, will not be returning to Berlin this year. He’ll be making his first appearance at the ING New York City Marathon, instead.
In 2009 Berlin was Europe’s second largest marathon (behind London) with 34,994 finishers.
